Students

In addition to Project Director Marty Martinson, six Doctor of Public Health students - Valarie Jernigan, Marlon Maus, Kim Coleman-Phox, Karuna Chibber, Fatima Rodriguez, Caricia Catalani - learned from and worked with the senior leaders during the two day honoring and training event in February. Each student was paired with a peer mentor and a group of honorees sharing a common focus (e.g., working with families and youth or healthy aging). The students will each stay in touch with 5 of the seniors over the next year, calling or e-mailing every month or two, learning how the members of their group are doing and how their community projects are going, and learning of any technical assistance they might need which project staff or other School of Public Health students might be able to provide. The 6 DrPH students also participate in local regional reunions, help put interested seniors in touch with each other where common interests or activities are uncovered, and share with the Project Director updates on their small group of senior leaders, both for possible newsletter items and to keep for use in the booklets and other project products and activities.
