Socrates APOP FAQs

1. What does POP and APOP mean?

POP stands for Post Office Protocol. APOP is considered a command by the people that wrote it. We assume it stands for Authenticated Post Office Protocol.

2. What's the reason for this APOP business?

Every Eudora connection you make sends your username and password across the network in clear text. This is a popular way for hackers to see your password using a "sniffer" program. With APOP, your password is encrypted while being transmitted over the network.

3. What if I'm not concerned about security or the privacy of my email?

The issue is bigger than just your account and mail file. If a hacker gains entrance to a computer via your userid password, the hacker has an easier time of compromising other accounts on the entire system.

If you don't need a login account, you should be using the free UCLink service.

4. Will APOP become mandatory?

Yes, sometime in the future when APOP becomes available on more mail client programs.

5. Which pop email client programs support APOP authentication?

Eudora Pro for Mac's and PC's support APOP. At this time, Netscape does not support APOP. Eudora Pro is licensed to the campus and supported by Workstations Software Support. For more info and to download the latest version of Eudora, go to the PC/Windows Support Software page or the Macintosh Support Software page.

6. What if I still want to use Netscape to surf the net?

No problem. It's just the mail program portion of the Netscape browser that would be affected by moving to APOP. You can continue to surf the net with your Netscape browser.

7. I used the popauth command on Socrates and it turns out my mail client program doesn't support APOP. What should I do?

To remove yourself from the popauth database, telnet to Socrates and type:
Confirm your APOP password at the "Old password" prompt.
At the "New password" prompt, type:

8. Just how many passwords do I need for Socrates access?

It depends on how you connect and what service you wish to use.

NOTE: Whether you use APOP authentication or not, the password dialog box doesn't differ in it's appearance. In both cases it asks "Please enter the current password for userid@socrates"

9. What if I want to read my email while I'm away from the campus?

If you are using APOP, you will either have to use an APOP-capable pop email client or remove yourself from the APOP database with the popauth command. See item 7.

10. How does this affect using Pine to read mail when I log in?

It doesn't. You will use your userid password when you telnet to Socrates to use Pine.

11. Well, I gave it a try and got an error message. What does it mean? What do I do?

These are the most common errors encountered:

12. What do I do if I forget my APOP password?

You will need to go to User and Accounts Services in 206 Evans to request a new password. Be sure to bring a picture id. Their hours are 10am-4pm Monday through Friday.
