Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors living military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. See:

Ageing in the UK is an interactive mapping tool which allows you to analyze the age structure of the population at the Local Authority (LA) level more easily. You can see how the population has aged over time and is projected to continue to age by selecting from a list of indicators of population ageing, such as median age, and animating the map. Lecture/Discussion
All Students with an Interest in Aging, Exciting news! Our first UCB "Students in Aging" (SIA) event is "on" and this will no doubt be a fresh, compelling, and lively presentation/discussion that students (& SIA affiliates!) from ALL disciplines will truly appreciate! ... a rare yet essential & stimulating topic.
Our featured speaker is Marty Martinson, MPH, M.Ed. (who will soon have a PhD from UCB's School of Public Health; Ms. Martinson is also slated to teach a new graduate level public health course in critical gerontology in spring 2010, sponsored by our UCB Center on Aging!)
Note: As always, there will be plenty of time for scrumptious PIZZA (compliments of our Center), and networking too!
UC Berkeley's Students in Aging (SIA): SIA is an informal, multidisciplinary, student group- sponsored by our UC Berkeley Center on Aging- where it's all about "engaging aging" on campus. We draw upon various disciplines, & include those who are working in the field! It's great for fun-filled networking, and includes regular email updates on aging events and resources. In addition, we sponsor at least 2 exciting aging events per year! We have three amazing student co-leaders: Tom Blair and Anisha Chandra, 3rd year UCSF-UCB Joint Medical Program students (JMPers), and Evie Kalmar, our new co-leader and a 1st year JMPer.
